The Bryden Central Community House aims to serve several blocks in Detroit’s Midwest neighborhood. The community has previously been organized around a block club, formed in 2017 by Ashaki herself.
The physical organization is currently centered on a Little Free Library that supplies both books and food as available.
When Ashaki’s neighbor Miss Ann died in 2015 squatters moved in, bringing too many people for the space and 2-3 years of noise and chaos. After a battle with the city of Detroit Ashaki bought three vacant lots on the street in 2019 where she planted butterfly, pollinator and hummingbird gardens. A few months later, once the squatters moved out and the house had been stripped of copper and anything else of resale value, Ashaki was able to purchase it and put a new roof on it. Later she had the house re-wired so that it can be lit for safety.
The goal for the space is to provide introductory herb classes for the community, including lessons in canning, gardening and other aspects of sustainability and self-sufficiency. The space will also be available to host the Detroit Region Herbal Collaborative, which equips herbalists to serve in their communities. There is a dream-plan of adding a community pantry and indoor aquaponics to grow fresh food and herbs throughout the year.
In order to make the space usable it requires new plumbing, a furnace, a hot water tank, security doors, eventually new siding, and possibly new windows. Part of the dream-plan includes completing the partially-finished attic to provide indoor gardening space. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward those goals.
